Fall Festival - Thanksgiving - Christmas Recital
First, a few quick updates:

  • There will be no lessons next week. If I don’t get a chance to see you, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving with your families!

  • Our studio Christmas Recital will be held on Sunday, December 14. (I wrote Saturday, Dec 14, in a previous email, so please double check your personal calendars!) There will be two showtimes: 2:00 & 4:00pm. Please let me know if you are participating. Our recital will take place at Word of God Lutheran Church in Sharpsburg (4486 East Hwy 34), after passing Sam’s and Costco going towards Newnan. I encourage everyone to participate and make friends with the stage.

I do want to thank all of our participants at this past weekend’s Fall Festival! Students did an outstanding job! It is certainly not easy getting in front of a large audience, especially knowing a judge is rating your performance! A double-whammy! But students were prepared and ready to tackle the challenge. I was so very proud!

I want to commend students for their awesome accomplishments!

The following students received a Superior rating:

Simon Carney
Nathaniel Carney
Marisa Cramer
Elise Crandall
Seren Eichholtz
Catherine Feygin
Mridula Gokul
Bruin Kelly
Lance Kelly
Marit Kelly
Emily Kirklin
Lily Madani
Michael Madani
Elena Ruiz
Leo Ruiz
Georgia Smith-Abad
Lucas Tang
Cara Thompson
Jaxon Tuvshintur
Lilianne Wallace

The following students received a Superior with a top score of 36:

Ethan Crandall
Cambria Eichholtz
Ethan Kwok
Maggie Mullins
Brooke Wallace

And a special congratulations to the following students for receiving a Superior with a perfect score plus the bonus point:

Alex Ruiz
Eunice Tuvshintur

Congratulations again, everyone!!! 👏👏👏

For those students who took the GMTA Test, the test scores will not be released until sometime in December or January. Please be patient. As soon as I know, you will know. Promise.

Keep practicing, y’all! We are ready for some holiday tunes next!

Spooky Hall Results!
Thank you again for all of the amazing (and crazy awesome!) performances and spirit that everyone put into their Halloween videos! The creativity was very high and I commend all the efforts that went into practicing, decorating, recording, and editing! That’s a lot of work!

I also deeply enjoyed the drawings and poetry that students produced! It’s always refreshing to see another creative side of my students and allowing it to shine. We had more poetry than ever, and wow…it was very inspiring.

Now the time has come to reveal the final tally of votes! As you all know, students voted for their favorites. I do not veto or regulate these outcomes. I trust my students and their educated opinions. I did get a chance this past week to ask many of them how they made their decisions, and I was blown away by their evaluation process—and very proud.

I also want to commend the student who found the hidden bonus prize! It was a tough one this year and no one else was able to find it. Some came very close!

Congratulations to all of our participants!

Spooky Hall is Now Open!🎃
Our 2025 Halloween Spooktacular is now live!

Thank you all again for your hard work in getting these performances and videos ready! I have certainly enjoyed the amount of creativity on display…and I hope you do too—some of the best ever!

And wow! I am also very impressed by the level of talent students have shown in their Poet or Show It submissions! Which reminds me, sorry to interject with a little unrelated reminder, but if anyone wants to try their writing skills on a more competitive stage, the Angie Greer Music in Poetry Competition deadline of November 1st is quickly approaching. Click here for more information.

Now that the work is done, I hope you all enjoy our Spooky Hall event! Don’t forget to vote for your favorites by Halloween Night. Voting will close on October 31st and winners will be announced on November 2nd. Rules are at the end of the page, but remember: you must vote to win.  And you cannot vote if you did not participate.  (That goes for Poet or Show It as well!)

There is also a hidden award for the first person to find it, an early bird special! It’s a tough one!…a brand new scavenger hunt that incorporates elements of previous years, plus a few new tricks. Happy Hunting!

I hope you all enjoy!!! And may you have a happy and safe Halloween week!!!

Sleep soundly!

A Few Reminders!
I hope everyone is enjoying this amazing weather! Fall time is getting pretty busy, so I just want to send out a few little reminders.

Halloween videos are due this Wednesday—along with submissions for the Poet or Show It part of our event! If you need a little more time, you can have until Thursday night. The website goes live on Saturday morning at 10am. This is simply to give ALL students an opportunity to earn the early bird prize (only one can get it)!

You can submit videos via text, email, google drive, or WhatsApp. Drawings and poems can be submitted in person or, if necessary, via text or email as JPG files. Please make a scan or take a really good picture without any shadows of your phone.

Once your recordings are done, students should be focusing on their Fall Festival pieces, with a little time devoted to their Christmas songs and competition/Federation music. Fall Festival is on Saturday, November 15.

Our Christmas Recital will take place on Sunday, December 14. Please notify me by November 30 if you will be participating.

On a side note, when ordering books from now on, if I find cheaper “used” copies of what a student needs, I will order that instead. Also, if I notice that a student is done with a book that another student needs, I will take that book and give a 50% credit to a student’s account while charging the new owner the same credited amount. If you do not wish for me to do this, please let me know. I figure it’s better to make some use of a book that will otherwise no longer be needed (and a 50% credit seems like a fair enough trade value). But I understand if you want to keep these books! I’m a bit of a book hoarder myself.

For students who take lessons Wednesdays-Saturdays, please remember that there won’t be any lessons November 5-8. These are the dates I attend the GMTA State Conference. This is a split week from earlier in September (Week 29, as shown in the studio calendar).

That’s it for now! See you all at Spooky Hall!

October Updates!
Just a few updates for the upcoming months!

FALL FESTIVAL AND GMTA THEORY

Fees for Fall Festival and GMTA Theory Testing will be applied to October Tuition ($20 each). This is only for participating students. All students should be aware if they are participating. If you are not sure, please ask me.

Both of these events will take place on Saturday, November 15—so please mark your calendars. Theory participants will take the test ONLY at 12:00pm and perform at 10:30am, along with siblings. Students not taking the test will be scheduled at one of the following showtimes: 9:00am, 12:00pm, 1:30pm, 3:00pm. If you have a conflict, please let me know as soon as possible so I can make a showtime request. But please keep in mind that the 9:00am showtime cannot be guaranteed due to the many requests that come in for that showtime.

No refunds will be given after October 1 for GMTA Theory or October 15 for Fall Festival because these are the deadlines and I will already have submitted applications and payments.

BOOKS

All students are required to have true book copies of their music. NO PHOTOCOPIES are allowed at any events other than our studio recitals. If a student shows up with a photocopy, they will still be allowed to perform but will not receive a rating. I will be ordering books for many upcoming events (including Fall Festival, Local Auditions and Federation) and—due to the large amount of books—I will be charging for books before placing the orders. I hope this is understandable.

HALLOWEEN

I hope everyone is already thinking about their videos! I have received a few already and they are SOOOO GOOD!!! Please make sure to submit these by October 22, along with your Poet or Show It submissions.

If you have any questions regarding any of these events, please let me know.

Thank you!!!

August Studio Updates!
I hope you have all had a fun and relaxing summer, and that these first few weeks of school have been going well for everyone! I’m so thankful for all of you who made the transition with me to my new home studio, and I’m excited to welcome all the wonderful new students who joined us over the summer. Already, everyone is hard at work on many pieces as we prepare for the exciting events headed our way! I especially love the enthusiasm students are bringing to the table! I find it a little hilarious how of all the songs we have chosen, many students are already done with their Christmas selection. Y’all are too funny. I get it! Christmas is awesome!

Before I go any further, just a quick reminder about parking and lesson times: please avoid blocking the driveway.  Even though it’s a tight fit, there’s room for two cars if you pull past the fence—and it’s fine to use the grass if needed. Also, please enter the studio at your scheduled time (not early or late). You don’t need to wait outside; it’s okay to come in even if another lesson is wrapping up—it helps me keep things moving smoothly. Thanks so much!

Please take a moment to glance through the list below and mark your calendars if there is an event you wish to participate in. If you are not already familiar with these opportunities, or simply want to refresh yourself, you can find a brief overview of each event as you scroll further down.

More detailed information can be found on the List of Events Page. There will also be flyers for larger events in the studio if you prefer hard copies.

List of Events:
  • October 25 - Halloween Video Recital goes LIVE - Videos must be submitted by October 22 (earlier is appreciated)
  • November 1 - NFMC Angie Greer Poetry Contest
  • November 15, Saturday - Fall Festival / GMTA Theory Exam (Registration Deadline: October 1)
  • December 14, Sunday - Studio Christmas Recital (Registration Deadline: November 30)

  • April 18 - GMTA State Auditions (Final Round)
  • April 26, Sunday - Honors Recital

Participation is always encouraged but optional. These events nurture creativity and musicianship in powerful ways, and the skills gained extend far beyond piano—building confidence, discipline, and adaptability for a competitive world. Having a variety of goals to work toward keeps students motivated to practice and make steady progress, and the joy and pride that come from these experiences are unforgettable. Plus, they’re just plain fun! Providing these opportunities will continue to remain a high priority.

Spooky Hall - A Halloween Website Event

Date: Saturday, October 25, 2025
Link will be emailed and announced
Video Deadline: October 22, 2025

Participating students must play and record a video of a Halloween-themed song and submit it by October 22. Piano decor, costumes, skits, effects, storylines, friends and family always help enhance the fun! Please do not make your video any longer than 45 seconds over the performance of your song. And, it goes without saying, you can be spooky or funny, but keep it tasteful!

A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner will be chosen by student votes. Winners will receive Amazon gift cards ($50, $25, $15, respectively). You can also participate in the Poet or Show It showcase by submitting a Halloween-themed poem or illustration (any medium). One winner will receive a $25 gift card as well!

You can find ideas and inspiration from previous years by visiting Spooky Hall.

CFMTA Fall Festival

Date: Saturday, November 15, 2025
Fee: $20
Location: Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Peachtree City, GA
Registration Deadline: October 1, 2025

Students perform in front of a live audience and receive a rated evaluation from a judge. This is a wonderful way to prepare for other evaluated events or simply gain additional stage experience. Students must prepare a movement from any Sonata, Sonatina, or Dance from any era or style.

You may also take the GMTA Theory Exam during Fall Festival. ($20 fee)

Visit the Fall Festival Page for more information.

Local Auditions

Date: Saturday, February 14, 2026
Fee: $30 + $20 GATE Exam
Location: Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Peachtree City
Deadline: January 15, 2026

The GMTA Auditions is the largest piano competition in Georgia. There are three rounds: Local, Regional, and State.

The GATE Theory Exam will be required to advance to Regionals. Only Grades 4+ can move on to Regionals. Younger students in 2nd or 3rd grade may still participate for judge’s comments and experience, so the GATE Exam will not be necessary.

Regionals is a video round. Videos must be submitted via YouTube by March 18.

The State Auditions will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Piedmont University in Demorest, GA.

Visit the Local Auditions Page for more information.

CFMTA High School Scholarship Competition

This event takes place during Local Auditions. There is a $20 fee for consideration. If student is also participating in Local Auditions, they will not need to perform again. One 9th/10th grade student will win $300. One 11th/12th grade student will win $500.

Although High School Seniors do not have to perform at Local Auditions, you will have to perform if you are registering for the scholarship.

NFMC Federation Festival

Date: Saturday, March 21, 2026
Fee: $35 ($20 Theory)
Location: Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Peachtree City.
Registration Deadline: January 15, 2026

Students perform for a judge and receive a rating and evaluation, collecting points as they earn their cups. Consecutive Superior certificates are also offered to students who participate each year. There is also an opportunity to receive the Excellence in Artistry Award, which comes with bragging rights and a $50 price.

Visit the Federation Page for more information.

Piano Guild

Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026
Fee: Ranges $32-50 (depending on class levels)
Location: Townsend Performing Arts Center, Carrollton, GA (University of West Georgia Campus)
Registration Deadline: March 15, 2026

Evaluations are a little tougher as students perform for a grade and are promoted to higher classes while earning their pins and plaques. Certificates and Report Cards with judge’s comments are also given. The more pieces a student performs, the higher the recognition.

Visit the Piano Guild Page for more information.

Theory Exams 101

There are 3 different theory examinations students may take:

  • The GMTA Theory Exam includes a written portion and a listening portion. It’s a great way to highlight how students are doing in their musical development and general understanding of theory (how music works). Students progress through twelve different levels. Also, students who take this exam and pass the required level will be exempt from the GATE Exam at Local Auditions—less stress on competition day. This exam will take place during Fall Festival. Registration deadline is October 1. Fee is $20.

  • The GATE Exam is a written test. There is no listening portion. This exam is required (4th grade and up) for anyone who participates at Local Auditions. Students must pass in order to proceed to Regionals. This exam will be given at Local Auditions. Fee is $20.

  • The Federation Theory Test is a bit easier than the previous two. Students may also collect theory cups as a separate event from their solo performances. Nice! This exam is given during Federation. Fee is $20.

CFMTA Masterclass Opportunity

Date: Tuesday, February 3, 2026
Fee: Free for Fall Festival participants, $25 otherwise
Location: Fayette Friendship Community Church, Fayetteville
Registration Deadline: January 15, 2026

Five students from the Coweta-Fayette Music Teachers Association are chosen to perform and receive instruction from an accomplished professor. Students are chosen by members of CFMTA based on repertoire and level of playing, early intermediate to advanced.

If you would like to be included for possible selection, please let me know.

Visit the Masterclass Page for more information.

For Advanced Competitors

There are various other competitions we can explore, some at the national level. Most have cash prizes, great exposure, and look great on your resume whether you intend to be a music major in college or not. These competitions are not local, so students must be willing to travel to Metro-Atlanta areas.

For Composers

If you are a composer and would like to submit your work for evaluations or competitive opportunities, please let me know. There are various events available we can explore on the side through several organizations, including the Music Teachers National Association, Piano Guild, and the NFMC Junior Composers Competition (which you can also earn cups for as part of Federation).

For Writers

  • NFMC Essay Contest - $75 prize and publication. The theme for 2026 is Music is Our Constant Companion. Deadline is January 10, 2026.

  • Angie Greer Poetry Contest - $100 prize and publication. Poem must be music themed, 8-30 lines. Deadline is November 1, 2025.

Other Dates

  • Sunday, December 14, 2025 -Studio Christmas Recital - Word of God Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg ($20 fee)

  • Sunday, April 26, 2026 - CFMTA Honors Recital - Fayette Friendship Community Church, Fayetteville - 2:00pm (For students who receive an OP at Local Auditions or Excellence in Artistry Award at Federation.)

  • May 10, 2026 - Studio Spring Recital - Word of God Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg ($20 fee)

Thank you for reading.

I am here to answer any questions you might have. More reminders will go out as we get closer to each event date.

Please let me know in which events you would like to participate. I do like preparing students as soon as possible. If you are uncertain, we can always start preparing—but please keep the deadlines in mind and notify me if a conflict comes up. I cannot offer refunds past the deadline as I will have already paid for student registrations.

Thank you again! And I look forward to another amazing year!!!

Summer Break Reminder
Hope everyone is having a great summer! Please remember we are on a summer break and lessons will resume the week after Fourth of July, starting July 7th.

The most updated Studio Calendar has been posted. As previously mentioned, I will be adding Saturdays to my studio schedule, though the policies will be slightly different. This is due to the fact that many of our yearly events occur on Saturdays—and I will also appreciate a few Saturdays to spend with family. Saturdays will require 30 lessons a year and lessons must be a minimum of 45 minutes.

Enjoy your next few weeks and I hope everyone has a wonderful Independence Day!

May 25, 2025

May Studio Updates
Thank you again for such an incredible pair of recitals last Sunday! Everyone did a spectacular job! It’s always so inspiring to see all those hours of hard work come to full fruition in the span of a recital.

Studio updates are below, but before going any further, I do want to announce the 2025 RPS Halls of Fame Inductee! This student has been one of the hardest workers since we started lessons together in April of 2021 as a first grader. In that time, he has participated in GMTA Auditions, Federation, Fall Festival, and Piano Guild without exception. He learns so many songs that sometimes we struggle choosing what to perform. Most recently, he won first place at the Kiwanis Music Showcase! Congratulations goes to:
Kai Otsuki

👏👏👏

Studio Updates:

Lessons will continue at my home on May 26. Please let me know if you don’t have the address yet.

I am changing the “While on the premises” portion of my policies. Everything else is staying the same. Please read this revision because it is very important to understand that my new location is also my home. I will attach it below.

Also, if you haven’t already done so, please let me know of any travel plans you might have in June and July.

The studio calendar for the remainder of 2025 has also been updated.

Amendment to Policies

While on the Premises:
Lessons must start and end on time. Please address any questions or concerns during the lesson or via text/email. Please enter the home studio at your exact lesson time. Do NOT enter early or wait outside for an exiting student.

The home studio driveway is single car width. Please pull up all the way and park toward the left or right without blocking anyone in. Leave ample space for exiting students to reverse.

No bathroom will be available unless it is an emergency. Do not ask to enter my home for any reason. The backyard is NOT available for playing. Please respect personal privacy and remember the studio is also my home.

Parents/Guardians must remain on the premises at all times unless alternative arrangements have been approved. All prospective new students must have at least one phone consultation before visiting the studio.

Some other tidbits:

The driveway curb is high, so when turning into the driveway, don’t be in a hurry.

If coming from Hwy 54 to Hwy 16, East Coweta Middle School is letting out between 3:00-4:30 or so. Traffic control police keeps things moving but slowly.

I advise students coming from north PTC between 4-7 to avoid Hwy 54. Go south on Hwy 74 and take Rockaway Rd. Traffic is much better.

Anyone using Rockaway Road should know that the speed limit is slow and Senoia cops are bored.

If you hate driving slow, take Hwy 74 to Hwy 85. Make a right, then another right when you get to Hwy 16. It’s more driving but less hassle.

Nighttime students: my subdivision has no streetlights. It is DARK. Please drive carefully.

Thank you again, everyone! And see you all soon!

May 17, 2025

A Few Reminders
Tomorrow is our big day!!! And I can’t wait!

Please remember that our recital will be held at Word of God Lutheran Church (4486 SR-34, Sharpsburg, GA 30277).

Students should arrive a few minutes early and dressed nicely. Please bring something to share for the reception.

Also, this past week was our last week at RPS in Peachtree City. There will sadly be no more lessons at that location. There will also be a break next week. Lessons will resume on May 26 at my home in Senoia. Let me know if you need the address.

I would appreciate any positive words you might have from lessons at my studio. You can leave a review here.

Last but not least, the Remind app is no longer sending out texts to anyone without the app installed on their phones. Because of this, I will be discontinuing the use of this app, which really stinks because it was very helpful. If anyone knows of an alternative, feel free to let me know. Thanks in advance!

That’s about it for now! See you all tomorrow!

May 1, 2025

Spring Recital and Other Updates
Spring Recital is just around the corner! If you haven’t already, please let me know if you can or cannot participate. The recital will be on Sunday, May 18, at Word of God Lutheran Church (4486 East Highway 34, Sharpsburg, GA 30277). The showtimes will be 2:00pm and 4:00pm. ($20 fee)

I also want to congratulate a few students for some very recent and cool achievements this Spring!

Studio Updates

I do want to say Thank You for all the heartfelt congratulations on my new home since I made the announcement! It has been a bit tumultuous, but I am happy to say that I closed on the house a few weeks ago and I am now an official homeowner.

As many of you have noticed, the studio is fairly empty! I do apologize for that, but it was simply easier and more affordable to move house and studio at the same time.

Lessons at the Peachtree City studio will sadly come to an end on May 16. Lessons will continue at my new home starting the week of May 26. Please let me know as soon as possible if you need a different day and time.

I do urge everyone to consider continuing our amazing accomplishments at my new location. Trust me, I understand the drive might be quite an inconvenience, but I assure you that you’ll continue to receive excellence from me as your teacher. I always strive to provide the best possible education in Piano Performance. Either way, I thank you for your amazing support.

And thank you for another wonderful school year! I look forward to seeing you all at the Spring Recital!

With deep appreciation!

March 3, 2025

Late Winter Congratulations!
I want to congratulate some incredible accomplishments we’ve had this winter. It has been a busy two months and students have been hard at work as they prepare for various events. Before I begin, I do want to remind everyone of a few upcoming dates worth noting.

  • Saturday, March 29 - Federation (Schedules will be released very soon.)
  • Saturday, April 26 - Piano Guild (Please let me know if you would like to participate in this event. I will be registering students in the next two weeks.)

Now…for our recent accomplishments!

On February 15, students participated at Local Auditions, the first round of the GMTA piano competition. The following students received an Outstanding Performance Award and will be moving on to Regionals! This is not easy!!! So major congratulations to the following students:

Zioh Byun
Catherine Feygin
Lily Madani
Leo Nam
Kai Otsuki
Andrew Sexton
Lucas Tang
Eunice Tuvshintur

Let’s wish them all good luck at the Regionals round!

Every January, we return from the holidays and immediately review for an all-inclusive theory test. How fun! This test requires students to go all the way back to their first lesson and review all the concepts and terminology they have learned. Everyone must pass with a 90% or higher, or be submitted to weekly testing until they do. Yikes! (But it’s really not so bad! We are constantly using this information in our lessons!) I would like to recognize the following students for passing on their first attempt:

Hannah Ambrose
Isabelle Ambrose
Helena Freeman
Aaron Jiang
Emily Kirklin
Caden Kwok
Ethan Kwok
Ryan Kwok
Pedro Sebastian Magaña-Luevano
Victoria Magaña-Luevano (with a 100%!!!)
Cara Thompson

I would also like to extend a special congratulations to Thomas Stark for winning First Place in the state at the NFMC Junior Composers Competition. This is his second year in a row winning this award! Absolutely amazing and I could not be prouder!!! Way to go, Thomas!!! If you would like to hear his beautiful composition, you can listen to it on the Videos Page of the website. Thomas was also recently chosen to participate in the CFMTA Masterclass at the start of February, where he gave one of the best performances I’ve ever heard from him yet. You can check that one out at the Thomas Hall of Fame Page!

Congratulations again, everyone!

November 16, 2024

Spooky Hall is Live!
Our 2024 Halloween Spooktacular is now live!

Thank you all again for your hard work in getting these performances and videos ready! I have certainly enjoyed the amount of creativity on display…and I hope you do too!

Don’t forget to vote for your favorites. Rules are at the end of the page, but remember: you must vote to win.

There is also a hidden award for the first person to find it, an early bird special.  And I think it’s a tough one! A brand new scavenger hunt.

I would also like to thank Andrew Sexton for writing such a cool poem. He doesn’t know it yet, but it is now the wraparound arc of the show!

I hope you all enjoy!!! And may you have a happy and safe Halloween week!!!

Sleep soundly!

Spring Updates Extravaganza!
It has been one of the most incredibly busy spring seasons yet! I am very grateful to everyone for being so active this year as we moved from one event to the next. Student participation has been at an all-time high and the achievements have been absolutely astonishing! Not to mention—a lot of fun every step of the way.

And of course, it is always important to recognize these achievements—which are long overdue in some cases! Certificates and cups will be awarded at our upcoming Spring Recital on May 19! So I hope everyone is busy preparing!

Before going any further I do want to remind everyone that there will be a two-week break starting on the week of May 20th (after the recital). Please let me know of any lessons you will be missing in the months of June and July so we can reschedule them as soon as possible. For any questions regarding make-up lessons or Summer lessons, please visit the Policies Page.

Below are many congratulatory shout-outs to all of our deserving students!

  • On March 19, Helena Freeman had the opportunity to perform for composer Kevin Olson at the MTNA National Conference Masterclass in Atlanta. She did such a fantastic job, taking the stage in front of several hundred teachers and professors of music. How intimidating! Kevin Olson even sat down and did an improv duet with Helena. To watch this extremely cool performance, you can find it currently featured on the RPS Videos Page.

February Congratulations!
So many congratulations to send out this month! Students have been very busy and I appreciate everyone’s hard work!

Local Auditions, the first round of the GMTA Competition, took place last Saturday at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City. Congratulations to all of our participants for their performances. It was certainly not easy! We had two very tough judges—my goodness! Only 22 out of 50 students in our area made it to Regionals. But I am so very proud of everyone who participated and gave it their best effort!

Five of our students will be moving on to the Regionals Audition Round (Grades 4-11):

Catherine Feygin
Sophia Madani
Matthew Phan
Andrew Sexton
Juan Torres

The following student won the very demanding CFMTA High School Scholarship for Grades 11/12:

Juan Torres

The following student scored a perfect 100% on the GATE Exam:

Matthew Phan

Congratulations to everyone! And I wish them much success at Regionals, along with High School Seniors Juanchy Fritschy, Owen Sexton, and Alex Yang!

I also want to send a special congratulations to the 1st Place winner of the NFMC Junior Composer’s Statewide Competition (Holy Moly!!! This is an awesome accomplishment!):

Thomas Stark

Last but not least, a quick shout-out to the students who passed our all-encompassing studio theory tests with a 90% (or higher) on their first try:

Simon Carney
Catherine Feygin
Helena Freeman
Agustin Fritschy
Mayiah Grant
Aaron Jiang
Manu Kumar
Ethan Kwok (highest score of 99%)
Pedro Sebastian Magaña-Luevano
Victoria Magaña-Luevano
Matthew Phan
Sabine Shepro
Cara Thompson

Congratulations again to everyone for all of your massive accomplishments. I am spoiled rotten. Thank you!!!

I leave you with a wonderful poem:

Musical Notes by Helena Freeman

Musical notes what a lovely sound,
Musical notes what a lovely song!

To my ears a pleasure,
To my eyes a sight,
To my hands a wonderful guiding light!

Musical notes with a roaring crescendo
Musical notes with a hushing diminuendo!

My ears will listen,
My hands will play,
The lovely melody I enjoy every day!

Enjoy the rest of your winter break! See you all next week!

CFMTA Masterclass with David Watkins
RPS students Juan Torres and Owen Sexton performed for pianist David Watkins at the annual CFMTA Masterclass. They both did an outstanding job, playing incredibly demanding pieces in front of an audience before receiving further guidance from the clinician. I could not be prouder of these young men!

Updates - Events and Fees ($$$)
As I had previously mentioned, the deadline for several events is Monday, January 15.

I will be submitting all applications and payments on this date. Please be aware that all fees will be collected with February Tuition. (NOTE: As a courtesy to siblings who participate in Auditions AND Federation, Federation fees will be collected in March Tuition).

Also, all students must have their own ORIGINAL copy of each piece they perform. Copyright laws are highly observed at these events. Students will be receiving their own music over the next few weeks. I do not lend music out for these events unless it is a rare book or out of print. Book charges (if applicable) will also apply in February Tuition.

Here are the fees for each event:

Junior Composers $20
Local Auditions $25
GATE Test $15
Federation $30
Federation Theory $18
CFMTA High School Scholarship $20
Poetry Contest $0 (Deadline Jan 31)
Piano Guild $33-38 (Deadline March 15)

If you need to cancel any event, please do so before the deadline. Once all payments are submitted, I cannot offer a refund. Please check your calendars and make sure the following dates are free and clear if you are participating:

February 17 - Local Auditions
March 23 - Federation
April 13 - State Auditions (if eligible)
May 4 - Piano Guild (deadline March 15)

If you are not available for Federation but do not want to miss your points for the year or consecutive standing, I can transfer you to the Griffin Festival on Saturday, March 9 (about a 40min drive from Peachtree City).

Other important reminders:

  • All music must be memorized.
  • You MUST bring original music with you to every event.

I’ll be happy to answer any questions. It's a busy time of year! Thank you for reading.

January 8, 2024

Happy New Year! ...and updates!
Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had an awesome break and already enjoying the first week of 2024! Our Christmas Recital was truly incredible last month! Thank you!

I look forward to starting lessons back up this week. There are various events coming up and most of them have a deadline of January 15 for registration. If you haven’t already notified me of your intent to participate, please do so as soon as possible.

If you are willing and able, I need two parent volunteers to serve for one hour as room monitors during Federation. For convenience, you will be scheduled around the same time your child will be performing. All you have to do is sit in the room as students are evaluated by a judge. You can bring a book or mobile device (no volume or ringer). Please let me know if you can help. Thank you!

Here’s a quick overview of what lies ahead:
  • Angie Greer Poetry Contest - Five students will receive a $100 cash prize and publication. Poem must be music themed and titled, 8-30 lines. Deadline is January 31. Give it a shot! You never know!
  • February 6 - CFMTA Masterclass with pianist David Watkins.
  • February 17 - Local Auditions (GMTA Competition - First Round) $25 Fee + $15 GATE Theory Test (if student is not exempt).
  • February 17 - CFMTA High School Scholarship Competition. One 9th/10th Grade Student will win $300. One 11th/12th Grade student will win $500.
  • March 23 - Federation - $30 + $18 Theory Test
  • April 13 - GMTA State Auditions (Final Round)
  • April 28 - CFMTA Honors Recital
  • May 4 - Piano Guild
  • May 19 - Studio Spring Recital (Tentative)

A few quick notes as we start the new year:
  • Monthly Tuition Fee for lessons will be going up in July of 2024 to $125 per 30 minutes. This is the first increase my students have seen in seven years. Thank you for your support and understanding.

  • Please notify me of any Elementary School students with a very early time slot who are moving to Middle School in the fall. You might need a later time and I would like to prioritize you in May.

  • Having 8 graduating Seniors this year, I have learned more than ever how valuable piano lessons can be on college applications. None of these seniors are going to study music in college, but that does not make their commitment to piano any less valuable, personally or academically. It is not only a fun and enviable skill, but it also shows discipline, consistency, and awareness of culture and arts. Many colleges have an option for submitting a “Music and Arts” Portfolio. I keep very good records of all events students have ever participated in and can supply those as needed, including videos and recommendation letters. Please keep this in mind as you continue to study piano.

Before ending this email, I would also like to congratulate several students for their recent accomplishments:
  • Alex Yang participated at the Romantic Impressionistic Piano Competition in Atlanta and received an Outstanding Performance Award, the highest rating given at this event.

  • The following students took the GMTA Theory Exam and not only passed, but their scores are high enough to exempt the GATE Test at Local Auditions: Catherine Feygin, Sophia Madani, Andrew Sexton, Owen Sexton, Thomas Stark. Michael Madani and AJ Laughlin are also exempt due to their achievements last year.

  • Lastly, my studio was selected for inclusion at one of the Masterclass events at the MTNA National Conference! What an honor! I have chosen Helena Freeman to perform for and receive further guidance from composer Kevin Olson (whose music I frequently use!). I chose Helena because she is a late beginner who absolutely loves piano, participates in every event possible, handles herself like a little pro, and always brings a positive attitude. She was my immediate first choice, so I am thrilled that she is taking on the challenge!

Here’s to a wonderful 2024! I wish you all the absolute best! See you this week!

Christmas Recital!
Saying goodbye to another year can be bittersweet, but not at our studio recitals! We get to witness the growth and progress our students have achieved, and it is always so amazing that all I can do is look forward to what they'll do next. We also enjoyed some wonderful renditions of our Christmas and Holiday favorites! So long, 2023! You were swell, but we gotta keep going!

Thank you, students! Spooky Hall was an Incredible Success!
Costumes, make-up, outstanding performances, spooky props, silly siblings, hilarious moments: I simply loved all the creativity students brought to their Spooky Hall presentations! As always, I am so blessed to work with such spirited students! Although we do get a little competitive around here, it is all in good fun and I appreciate how well-rounded the voting process went. I am so glad I don't get to pick the winners! Phew!

Thank you, everyone, for participating and giving it your all!

Fall Greetings & 2023/2024 Events
I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and that the new school year is going as smoothly as possible!

Please take a moment to glance through the list below and mark your calendars if there is an event you wish to participate in. If you are not already familiar with these opportunities, or simply want to refresh yourself, you can find a brief overview of each event as you scroll further down this email.

More detailed information can be found on the List of Events Page. There will also be flyers for larger events in the studio if you prefer hard copies.

List of Events:
  • October 28 - Halloween Video Recital - Videos must be submitted by October 22.
  • November 11 - Fall Festival / GMTA Theory Exam
  • December 17 - Studio Christmas Recital

Each of these events helps develop creativity and musicianship in extraordinary ways, and the skills students gain from the experience is relevant beyond piano and performance in a competitive world. Having a variety of goals to work towards motivates practice and ongoing progress. And they also happen to be incredibly fun! Providing these opportunities will continue to remain a high priority.

Spooky Hall - A Halloween Website Event

Date: Saturday, October 28, 2023
Link will be emailed and announced
Video Deadline: October 22, 2023

The State Auditions will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Piedmont University.

The GATE Theory Exam will be required to advance to Regionals. Only Grades 4+ can move on to Regionals. Younger students may still participate for judge’s comments and experience.

CFMTA High School Scholarship Competition

This event takes place during Local Auditions. There is a $20 fee for consideration. If student is also participating in Local Auditions, they will not need to perform again. One 9th/10th grade student will win $300. One 11th/12th grade student will win $500.

Registration Deadline: March 15, 2024

Evaluations are a little tougher as students perform for a grade and are promoted to higher classes while earning their pins and plaques. Certificates and Report Cards with judge’s comments are also given. The more pieces a student performs, the higher the recognition.

Visit the Piano Guild Page for more information.

Theory Exams 101

There are 3 different theory examinations students may take.

1) The most difficult one is the GMTA Theory Exam.  This exam includes a written portion and a listening portion. It’s a great way to highlight how students are doing in their musical development and general understanding of theory (how music works). Students who take this exam and pass will also be exempt from the GATE Exam at Local Auditions—less stress on competition day. This exam will take place during Fall Festival. Registration deadline is September 30th. Fee is $15.

2) The GATE Exam is a written test. There is no listening portion. This exam is required (4th grade and up) for anyone who participates at Local Auditions. Students must pass in order to proceed to Regionals. This exam will be given at Local Auditions. Fee is $10.

3) The Federation Theory Test is a bit easier than the previous two. Students may also collect theory cups as a separate event from their solo performances. Nice! This exam is given during Federation. Fee is $18.

CFMTA Masterclass Opportunity

Date: Tuesday, February 6, 2024
Fee: Free for Fall Festival participants, $25 otherwise

Old News...Still Kinda Cool News
Springtime is always so busy that I forget some of the cool little things that happen along the way...or at least until I'm fortunate enough to stumble upon them again. I was just clearing out pictures and files from my phone when I saw this picture from May 20. My students Adam and Chloe had brought me their Whitewater Middle School 2023 Yearbook to show me that my name made a surprise appearance within its pages! Back in November of 2022, this amazing sibling duo had performed at the WMS Talent Show. The yearbook recognized their performance and that of their peers. What's also kinda cool about all this is that I happen to be a former WMS alumni (7th and 8th grade...yikes!). It's definitely a happy "come full circle" moment. If you want to check out Adam and Chloe's performance from that day, it is now available in the Videos Page under Miscellaneous Videos. Thanks to their mom for a copy!

Spivey Hall Children's Choir Spring Concert
Picture
Today I attended the Spivey Hall Children's Choir Spring Recital, where I had the great honor of hearing two of my students--siblings Thomas and Edward Stark--singing for the first time. On top of the that, Thomas accompanied the choir at the piano for the opening number! How cool is that?! It was wonderful to also receive their nomination for the Spivey Hall Children's Choir Outstanding Music Educator Award. To be recognized by such a prestigious organization within the same walls where once upon a time I used to study was a very surreal experience that I won't stop cherishing anytime soon. A very heartfelt THANK YOU to the Stark family!

Piano Guild Success!
Picture
Piano Guild took place yesterday at the Townsend Performing Arts Center in Carrollton, GA. It was about a 50-minute drive from Peachtree City to the University of West Georgia campus, but well worth the travel. Students performed for Guild judge Christine Smith on a beautiful grand piano in a theater setting. I felt extremely proud to hear the rave reviews from the judge after all the performances were over!

Though it's been around longer, Piano Guild uses a similar rating system as Federation. After performing, students receive a report card with comments from the judge and a checklist of possible Commendations (C's) or items that Need Attention (A's). (It's hard to rewire your brain to think A's are not so good!) This checklist thoroughly covers nearly all aspects of piano performance. Scores are awarded depending on the number of pieces performed, each individual performance, and testing on scales and cadences.

Congratulations to all participating students for doing such an incredible job!

Spring Roundup and Summer Plans

Spring Roundup

The Spring season is nearly over and it has been a busy one! We still have Piano Guild and our Studio Spring Recital in May to look forward to. Remember to confirm recital participation by April 30.

The State (and final) Round of the GMTA Auditions took place on April 15 at Piedmont University in Demorest, GA. Students competed against their peers throughout the entire state!

The following students received an Outstanding Performance Award at Regionals and made it to the State Round:
Juanchy Fritschy
Sophia Madani
Adam Phan
Matthew Phan
Andrew Sexton
Lucas Tang
Alex Yang

The following students received the Honorable Mention Award at the State Round:
Juanchy Fritschy
Adam Phan
Andrew Sexton

This past Sunday, 20 award-winning students from our local chapter performed at the CFMTA Honors Recital. This was a truly breathtaking concert from start to finish! I am especially proud of the following RPS award-winners who were invited to perform:
Juanchy Fritschy
Sophia Madani
Adam Phan
Andrew Sexton
Owen Sexton
Lucas Tang
Juan Torres
Alex Yang
Picture

Also, last Saturday Juan Torres won first place at the Jo Evans Competition in Decatur, GA. One of the challenges of this particular event is that competitors must perform at least one slow movement from a Classical sonata to showcase artistry, not just virtuosity. Juan has proven to have both! He'll now be performing two pieces at a special Winner's Recital on Monday for the Decatur Music Teachers Association.

Concluding our Spring Roundup of achievements, we have a new RPS Hall of Fame Inductee for 2023: Andrew Sexton! Andrew is now a State-Ranking competitor AND an Excellence in Artistry Award Winner. He has also excelled in Theory with a 100% score at Federation, not to mention his outstanding practice habits, consistent top-notch performances, and ability to integrate the smallest of details into his playing.

CONGRATULATIONS, EVERYONE!!!

SUMMER PLANS

The Studio Calendar has been updated for Fall.

Please let me know well in advance what weeks you will be traveling out of town. There are make-up days available during our studio off-weeks (see calendar). Please refer to the Summer Policies for any questions.

Federation - Results
Our Federation Festival took place this weekend and we had nearly 200 students from 16 teachers perform for 4 judges. I do want to thank my students and their parents for all of their hard work and support. I also want to thank Giao Nguyen and Sara Freeman for volunteering as parent monitors. It was a wonderful day indeed, with so many great accomplishments! And nothing beats seeing everyone coming and going throughout the day, whether excited or nervous or a little bit of both. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

Happy New Year!
I sincerely hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break!

I am very excited for our upcoming year and can’t wait to get back to lessons next week! The artistry I witnessed in 2022 was absolutely astonishing—and frankly, unparalleled. I am very grateful for all the hard work students put into every single event! Thank you again!

As a wonderful way to start 2023, I would like to invite everyone to a special event very dear to me. The CFMTA Solo Recitalist Event will have its second annual concert in just a few weeks. The intention is to provide a free concert for our local community, especially our students. It’s so important for them to hear what the piano is capable of doing in the hands of master performers—live and in person. Last year was our debut event, and we were very fortunate for its success.

This year, virtuoso Dr. You Ju Lee will be performing for us—and she is absolutely AMAZING!

Date: Sunday, January 29, 2023
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Fayette Friendship Community Church
(formerly known as North Fayette United Methodist Church)

847 New Hope Road
Fayetteville, GA 30214

I would greatly appreciate anyone willing to share this on their social media. This is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon! The program will include pieces by Schubert and Liszt.

In other news, I would like to congratulate several students for their achievements on the GMTA Theory Exam. This is one of the most difficult exams of its kind for pre-college students, especially due to the listening portion!

Outstanding Theorists
(score of 90-99)

Ethan Kwok
AJ Laughlin

Michael Madani
Sophia Madani
Lucas Tang

And a special congratulations to:

Outstanding Theorists with Honors
(perfect score of 100)

Owen Sexton
Thomas Stark

Looking ahead to 2023, please feel free to ask any questions pertaining to the various events available for students. You can visit the Full List of Events Page for more information. These events are optional but highly encouraged for the utmost experience. Many of them have deadlines in January.

I also need two parents to serve as Volunteer Monitors at Federation on March 18. You’ll have to sit in a judging room for 1 hour. You can bring a book, a device (on silent), or simply enjoy the performances. You will not be in the same room as your child will perform, but you will be scheduled during your child’s performance time. No parents or teachers are allowed in the judging rooms except for Volunteer Monitors. I will need to turn in the names of my two volunteers on January 15, so let me know if you would like to serve.  Thank you!

See you all next week! Have a wonderful 2023!
